Samsung's AI Chip GAIA Heads to Lenovo and HP for Testing

Samsung Electronics is stepping back into the PC chip arena with a new AI-focused processor. Codenamed GAIA, the chip is designed to accelerate generative AI tasks on PCs and has already been sent to major manufacturers like Lenovo and HP for testing. Mass production is expected to begin in 2027.

A Fresh Start in PC Chips

This isn't Samsung's first foray into PC processors. Back in 2012, the company developed Exynos chips for Chromebooks, but the effort fizzled out after two years. Now, with the rise of AI PCs, Samsung sees a new opportunity. GAIA is being developed by the System LSI division under Samsung's Device Solutions business unit. Prototype samples have been completed and are now undergoing performance verification at Lenovo and HP.

What Makes GAIA Tick?

GAIA is built on a 4nm manufacturing process and its core architecture revolves around a Neural Processing Unit (NPU). Unlike traditional CPUs or GPUs, this chip is specifically optimized for the heavy lifting required by generative AI. Samsung is also exploring how GAIA can work alongside Processing-In-Memory (PIM) technology. PIM allows data computation to happen directly inside storage devices, cutting down on the latency and energy consumption that typically comes from shuttling data back and forth. That's a big deal for edge AI, where efficiency is key.

Beyond the PC

Samsung isn't stopping at PCs. The company has its sights set on the robotics market as well, positioning GAIA for physical AI applications. While Samsung emphasizes that the chip is designed for strong performance per watt, specific details—like performance benchmarks, interface specs, and how it will fit into existing PC platforms—remain under wraps for now.

A Crowded Field

Samsung is entering a market that's already heating up. NVIDIA, Qualcomm, and Huawei have all jumped into the AI PC chip race. If everything goes according to plan, Samsung will start mass-producing GAIA in 2027, adding another heavyweight contender to the mix.
