Perplexity AI's Comet Browser Takes Aim at Google Chrome
Perplexity AI Enters Browser Wars with Comet
In a bold move to disrupt the browser market, Perplexity AI has officially launched its Comet browser, positioning itself as a challenger to Google Chrome's dominance. The AI startup, backed by NVIDIA, aims to redefine web browsing through deep integration of artificial intelligence.

AI-Powered Browsing Experience
The Comet browser comes pre-installed with Perplexity AI search, capable of generating intelligent summaries from search results. Its standout feature is the Comet Assistant, which operates in sync with browsing activity to provide contextual information without requiring manual input.
Early reviews highlight how the assistant can:
- Automatically identify content being viewed
- Answer questions about social media posts, videos, or documents
- Eliminate the need for copy-pasting content into chatbots
"The assistant is designed to automate routine tasks," explained a Perplexity spokesperson. This includes summarizing web pages, planning routes, managing emails, and conducting research - similar to capabilities demonstrated by OpenAI's Operator agent.
Strategic Rollout and Vision
The browser will initially be available to Perplexity Pro subscribers paying $200/month before expanding to users on the waitlist. CEO Aravind Srinivas revealed in March that the company aims to reduce reliance on mainstream browsers by creating what he describes as "an operating system for handling nearly all tasks."
Srinivas envisions seamless collaboration between applications and websites through Perplexity's AI technology. A demonstration video showcased the browser's voice command capability, where it successfully located a specific video featuring NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang discussing Perplexity products.
Competitive Landscape
The browser market faces increasing competition from AI-focused entrants:
- The Browser Company launched its DIA AI browser in June 2025
- Google continues investing heavily in AI search enhancements
- Rumors suggest OpenAI may develop its own browser solution
Despite these challengers, Google Chrome maintains a commanding 68% global market share according to StatCounter data - far ahead of Safari, Edge, and Firefox.
Perplexity's Rapid Growth
The 2022-founded startup has seen its valuation skyrocket from $3 billion to $9 billion in just one year due to surging interest in AI search technology. Recent reports indicate Perplexity is seeking $500 million in new funding at a $14 billion valuation.
