OpenAI's Robot Ambitions: Home Robots Can Wait, But the 'Brain' Comes First

OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, has finally put the rumors to rest: the company is indeed working on humanoid robots. But before you start dreaming of a robot butler, he's quick to clarify that home use isn't the top priority right now. Instead, OpenAI is setting its sights on more practical applications, like data centers and manufacturing.

Form Follows Function

In a recent podcast called "Sources," Altman revealed that OpenAI is exploring two distinct paths: humanoid robots and specialized machines tailored for specific environments. "We definitely will develop humanoid robots," he said, but he also stressed that not every robot needs to look like us. When a human form doesn't add practical value, why force it? That's why OpenAI is also designing non-anthropomorphic robots—think odd-shaped helpers that can navigate the cramped aisles of a data center with ease.

"The form of the robot is not the most important thing; what really matters is the robot brain," Altman explained. And that's where OpenAI's strength lies. The company recently unveiled GPT-6 Astra, which Altman calls "the most intelligent and aligned model in the world today." This "super brain" could be the key to making robots truly useful.

But why bother with humanoids at all? Altman points out that our world is built for humans. Doors, stairs, tools, even the way we interact with machines—everything is designed around our bodies. A robot that can open a door, operate a computer, or drive a forklift doesn't need to be humanoid, but it certainly helps when it is.

Building the Body: Hardware Takes Center Stage

While Altman insists that the AI brain comes first, OpenAI isn't content to be just a software company. The robotics division, established in May, is already making waves. Led by Aditya Ramesh (the mastermind behind Sora), the team is focused on deep collaboration between hardware and machine learning research.

Job postings tell an interesting story. Since the division's founding, robot-related positions in the San Francisco area have jumped from 11 to 19. The hiring push is heavily weighted toward hardware actuators—the muscles and joints of a robot. Roles include actuator design, electromagnetic systems, gear mechanics, and testing infrastructure. One core position involves taking a custom electromechanical actuator from concept to mass production, balancing torque density with real-world manufacturability.

This isn't OpenAI's first foray into robotics. Back in 2024, their models were already integrated with Figure AI's humanoid robot, Figure 01. Now, they're doubling down on building their own hardware.

The Long Game: Home Robots Are Coming, Eventually

So, when can you expect a robot to help with the dishes? Not anytime soon, Altman admits. "Home robots are not an immediate priority," he says, pointing instead to infrastructure and manufacturing as the current focus. But he's optimistic about the long-term potential: "One day, I think everyone should have a personal robot."

For now, OpenAI isn't sharing shipping dates or production targets. The road to consumer robotics is long, but with a powerful AI brain and a growing hardware team, the company is positioning itself for a future where robots are as common as smartphones.
