OpenAI's New Desktop App: Chat, Work, and Code in One Place
OpenAI just dropped a new desktop app that brings together chat, office work, and coding—all under one roof. The company announced the release on July 10, 2026, positioning it as a major step toward making AI assistants more versatile and accessible.
What's New?
The updated application replaces the previous Codex desktop version and now includes three core components: Chat, ChatGPT Work, and Codex. Users who already have Codex installed will find their existing tasks and projects carried over seamlessly. And if you prefer the old icon, you can switch back in settings—no fuss.
The Three Modules
- Chat: Handles everyday queries, searches, and interactive conversations. Think of it as your go-to for quick questions or casual back-and-forth.
- Work: Designed for knowledge-heavy tasks like research, data analysis, and creating documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports, or even websites. It's your productivity hub.
- Codex: Tailored for developers, this module lets you work with local files, repositories, terminals, and other dev tools. It covers the full coding workflow, from writing code to debugging.
Transition and Compatibility
If you're already using the ChatGPT desktop app, opening it will prompt you to download the new version. Both old and new can coexist on your machine. The old app will be renamed ChatGPT Classic and will continue to receive model updates, bug fixes, and security patches. However, OpenAI notes that some new features—like proxy support—might only land in the new app.
Data Sync: Cloud vs. Local
Chat history between the web version and the desktop app stays synced across devices. But here's the catch: cloud-based Work conversations won't show up in the desktop's Work section. And any threads or local files you create in the desktop Work module remain on that specific computer. This setup balances cross-device convenience with local privacy and security.
Why It Matters
By merging chat, office tools, and coding into one app, OpenAI is moving beyond single-purpose AI tools toward a unified productivity platform. Whether you're a developer writing code, a researcher analyzing data, or just someone looking for quick answers, this app aims to be your one-stop shop. It's a clear signal that the company wants to make AI assistants as integral to daily work as email or web browsers.
Key Points
- Unified experience: Chat, Work, and Codex modules in one desktop app.
- Smooth transition: Existing Codex users keep their projects; old ChatGPT app remains as Classic.
- Data strategy: Chat syncs across devices; Work data stays local for privacy.
- Target audience: Both developers and non-technical users.
- Future-proof: New features may debut exclusively in the new app.
