OpenAI's Humanoid Robot: Home Use Isn't the Goal—Yet

OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, recently dropped a bombshell on the podcast "Sources": the company is indeed building robots. But before you start dreaming of a robot butler, Altman has a caveat—humanoid form isn't the ultimate goal. What really matters, he says, is the "robot brain."

Form Follows Function

Altman confirmed that OpenAI will develop humanoid robots, but he also stressed that not every robot needs to look like us. When a human shape doesn't offer practical advantages, the company will create specialized, non-anthropomorphic robots tailored for specific tasks—like those designed for data center environments. "The form of the robot is not the most important thing," Altman explained. "What really matters is the robot brain."

So why bother with humanoids at all? Altman's reasoning is simple: our world is built for humans. From door handles to computer keyboards, everything is designed around our physical form. A robot that can navigate that world seamlessly needs to share our shape. That's why humanoid robots have practical value.

Just recently, OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra, which they call "the most intelligent and aligned model in the world today." This "super brain" is seen as a crucial foundation for bringing robots to life.

Building the Body

While Altman emphasizes that the AI brain comes first, OpenAI isn't content to be just a software company. They've already dipped their toes into hardware, integrating their models with Figure AI's Figure 01 robot back in 2024. And this past May, they officially launched OpenAI Robotics, led by Aditya Ramesh, the mastermind behind Sora. The division's foundation lies in a deep collaboration between robot hardware research and machine learning.

Job postings reveal a growing team: robot-related positions in the San Francisco area have jumped from 11 at the department's launch to 19. The focus is on hardware actuators, with roles covering actuator design, electromagnetic systems, gear design, and testing infrastructure. One core position involves overseeing the end-to-end design of custom electromechanical actuators, balancing torque density with mass production feasibility.

The Road Ahead

So, when can you expect a robot to help with chores? Not anytime soon. Altman admitted that home robots aren't the immediate priority—infrastructure and manufacturing take precedence. But he's optimistic about the long-term consumer market. "One day, I think everyone should have a personal robot," he said.

For now, OpenAI hasn't disclosed shipping dates or production targets. But with a clear vision and a growing team, the future of robotics looks promising—even if it's not coming to a living room near you just yet.
