In a landmark move for global AI education, OpenAI has partnered with India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to launch the OpenAI Academy India Branch. Announced on Thursday, this initiative marks the first international expansion of OpenAI's educational platform.

The collaboration will bring AI training to a wide range of Indian citizens through blended online and offline programs. Initial courses will be available in English and Hindi, with plans to expand to regional languages. The academy becomes a key component of IndiaAI's Future Skills strategy.

Implementation Details OpenAI will provide educational content for two major platforms:

  • FutureSkills (India's national digital skills initiative)
  • iGOT Karmayogi (civil servant training platform)

The partnership includes ambitious targets:

  • Six-city seminar tour across India
  • $100,000 in API credits for 50 approved startups/researchers
  • State-level hackathons reaching 25,000 students
  • Training for one million teachers in generative AI tools

Winners of student hackathons will earn spots at OpenAI's prestigious DevDay international developer conference.

Government Support Ashwini Vaishnaw, India's Minister of Electronics and IT, called the collaboration "an important step toward democratizing knowledge and technology" that will "accelerate local innovation." OpenAI Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon highlighted India's dynamic role in global AI development, stating the academy aims to build practical AI skills for daily life.

The academy will continue offering free resources including video tutorials, hands-on modules, and virtual events. This expansion follows OpenAI's mission to promote equitable access to AI knowledge worldwide.
