OpenAI Partners With India to Launch First Global AI Academy

OpenAI has teamed up with India's Artificial Intelligence Task Force (IndiaAI) to establish the OpenAI Academy India Branch, marking the education platform's debut outside the United States. Announced on Thursday, this partnership aims to democratize AI knowledge across India's vast population through tailored training programs.

The collaboration will deliver blended online and offline courses through India's FutureSkills platform and iGOT Karmayogi civil servant training system. Initial instruction will be available in English and Hindi, with plans to incorporate regional languages as the program expands.

Key components of the initiative include:

  • $100,000 in API credits for selected startups and researchers
  • State-level hackathons reaching 25,000 students
  • Training for one million Indian teachers on generative AI tools
  • Hybrid seminars across six major Indian cities

India's Federal Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw called the partnership "a crucial move toward technological democratization" that will "fuel local innovation and collaborative learning." Meanwhile, OpenAI Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon highlighted India's growing influence in global AI development, stating the academy will help citizens "harness AI confidently in their daily lives."

The academy will continue offering free resources including video tutorials, hands-on modules, and virtual events. Winners of student hackathons will earn invitations to OpenAI's prestigious International Developer Conference (DevDay).
