OpenAI Overtakes Anthropic in Enterprise AI Market Share
The race for enterprise AI dominance just took another turn. According to fresh data from Ramp, a corporate credit card and expense management platform, OpenAI has clawed its way back to the top, grabbing more than 40% of the U.S. enterprise AI market and edging past Anthropic.
Just a few months ago, the tables were turned. In May, Anthropic held a 41% share while OpenAI trailed at 39%. By July, Anthropic had stretched its lead to nearly 44%, with OpenAI close behind at around 40%. But since the third quarter kicked off, the momentum has shifted. Ara Kharazian, an economist at Ramp, notes that OpenAI's growth rate in this space has now outpaced Anthropic's.

The numbers come from Ramp's extensive dataset, covering more than 70,000 U.S. companies that funnel billions of dollars through its billing and corporate card products. The client base leans heavily toward the tech industry, so it's not a perfect snapshot of the entire market—large enterprises using other expense management services, like American Express, aren't included. Still, it offers a telling glimpse into where enterprise AI spending is heading.
So, what's behind OpenAI's resurgence? Kharazian points to GPT-5.6Sol, which is steadily winning over developers with its robust performance. Meanwhile, Anthropic's premium offering, Fable, has hit some snags—particularly around pricing and data retention requirements. Earlier, Anthropic mandated that Fable users keep their data for 30 days, a policy that stirred up more than a few complaints.
But here's the bigger picture: while these two giants battle for supremacy, the overall pie is growing. Ramp's data shows that the paid penetration rate for enterprise AI has climbed from just over 50% in March to nearly 56% in July. That means more companies are willing to open their wallets for AI tools, even as they weigh their options between OpenAI and Anthropic.
The tug-of-war between these two is far from settled. Customer loyalty in the AI space remains notoriously fickle, and with new models rolling out at breakneck speed, today's winner could easily become tomorrow's also-ran. For now, though, OpenAI has reclaimed the crown—at least for the moment.
