OpenAI Expands with Sora2 App and ChatGPT Shopping

OpenAI Accelerates Consumer Push with Sora2 and Shopping Features

OpenAI is rapidly evolving from an AI research lab into a consumer-facing platform, announcing two major initiatives: Sora2, a TikTok-style video app, and instant shopping integrations within ChatGPT.

Sora2: An AI-Only Video Platform

The standalone Sora2 app mirrors TikTok's vertical video format but with one key difference: all content is AI-generated. Users can create 10-second clips using OpenAI's technology but cannot upload external media. The platform includes social features like likes, comments, and "recreation" tools for collaborative AI content.

"This lets the public experience AI video's potential directly," an OpenAI spokesperson noted. The launch comes as TikTok faces U.S. regulatory uncertainty, potentially positioning Sora2 as an alternative. To address privacy concerns, the app includes identity verification for portrait usage in AI generations.

ChatGPT Gets Instant Checkout

In parallel, OpenAI has partnered with Etsy and Shopify to enable purchases directly within ChatGPT conversations. Powered by Stripe, this feature eliminates redirects to external sites—a move analysts say could monetize ChatGPT's massive user base.

"We want ChatGPT to help users accomplish real-world tasks," said Michelle Fradin, OpenAI's product lead. Currently limited to single-item U.S. purchases, the company plans to expand to multi-item carts and global markets soon. News of the partnerships boosted Etsy and Shopify stocks by 5-7%.

The aggressive expansion faces legal headwinds:

  • Sora2 defaults to using copyrighted material unless rights holders opt out—a policy drawing Hollywood backlash
  • Major studios like Disney have already sued over similar AI practices
  • OpenAI refuses bulk opt-out requests, requiring individual infringement reports

Key Points:

  1. Sora2 launches as an AI-exclusive TikTok competitor
  2. ChatGPT adds direct shopping via Etsy/Shopify
  3. Copyright policies spark creator disputes
  4. Stock jumps follow commerce partnerships
  5. Identity tools address portrait rights concerns
