OceanBase Seeks Funding to Transform into AI Data Platform
OceanBase, the distributed database that once handled Alibaba's Singles' Day traffic surges, is now chasing a new ambition: becoming an AI data platform. According to Bloomberg, the company is in talks with top institutions for an A-round financing of 2 to 3 billion yuan (about $280 to $420 million). The goal? To boost its independent operations and speed up its transformation.
A Rapidly Growing Business
OceanBase's annualized revenue hit over 1.4 billion yuan in 2026, marking a 70% year-on-year growth. The company serves thousands of customers, including heavyweights like Bank of Communications and China Mobile. It has already expanded into overseas markets such as Southeast Asia, Japan, India, and Latin America. Ant Group, OceanBase, and Ant Digital have not commented on the funding talks.
From Database to AI Platform
Born in 2010, OceanBase was originally built to handle the massive traffic of Alibaba's Singles' Day shopping festival. Over the years, it proved its mettle in distributed database technology. According to an IDC report, it ranked first in China's local deployment market share for distributed databases in 2025.
But the company isn't resting on its laurels. It's now competing with the likes of Databricks, expanding from core transaction systems to full-scale enterprise data management and AI data supply. OceanBase has enhanced its unstructured data processing capabilities and launched a new generation of lakehouse-integrated AI database in June 2026 to push commercialization forward.
A Step Toward Independence
Since 2024, OceanBase has established an independent board of directors and an equity incentive mechanism, significantly accelerating its market-oriented progress. This financing round is a key step in its journey toward independent operations. It also reflects a broader trend: Ant Group's innovative businesses are gradually building their own governance and financing mechanisms, speeding up their validation in the external market.
