NVIDIA Eyes Big Bet on Perplexity as AI Search Startup's Value Soars

NVIDIA is making waves again in the AI investment landscape. According to The Information, the chip giant is in discussions to invest in Perplexity, the AI search company that's been turning heads with its rapid growth. The deal could value Perplexity at over $30 billion, a staggering 50% increase from its valuation just a year ago.

What's fueling this surge? Perplexity's annual revenue has skyrocketed from $250 million to more than $750 million—a threefold jump. A big chunk of that growth comes from the launch of "Perplexity Computer," an AI agent that can handle multi-step tasks automatically. These agents consume more tokens, which translates directly into higher revenue for the company.

NVIDIA's interest in Perplexity isn't new. Earlier this year, the company had considered acquiring Perplexity outright to get its hands on the technology and talent. In March, Perplexity joined NVIDIA's Nemotron alliance, a group focused on advancing open AI models. So far, Perplexity has raised over $1.7 billion in total funding, and CEO Aravind Srinivas has hinted at a possible IPO around 2028.

This potential investment is part of a broader pattern for NVIDIA. The company has recently struck deals with AI model companies like Poolside and Groq, as well as AI chipmaker Enfabrica. The Groq deal alone is worth $2 billion, and Enfabrica's transaction is around $900 million. By investing in both AI infrastructure and application companies, NVIDIA is expanding its ecosystem influence—and likely boosting sales of its own GPUs and other products.

As AI applications shift from simple chat tools to more sophisticated intelligent agents, NVIDIA is positioning itself at the center of the AI supply chain. With a dual strategy of capital and computing power, the company is reinforcing its core role in the industry.
