Nadella's Warning: Don't Bet Everything on OpenAI or Anthropic, Microsoft Will Be the Cheapest Option
Microsoft finds itself in an unusual spot. It's both a giant cloud provider and a major investor in two leading AI labs, OpenAI and Anthropic. But as those labs push deeper into applications and agent infrastructure, CEO Satya Nadella isn't about to let them threaten Microsoft's core business.
A Stunning Quarter
Microsoft just reported a blockbuster quarter: $90 billion in revenue and $35.8 billion in net profit for Q4, with a full-year 2026 revenue of $331.8 billion and net profit of $133.7 billion. Nadella's message to enterprise customers is clear: don't get too cozy with any single AI lab. He warns that tying intelligent agent frameworks to underlying models is dangerous—it means handing over internal secrets to model vendors whose trustworthiness may be questionable.
From Hugging Face to MAI
During the Wednesday earnings call, Nadella laid out his strategy. He emphasized the importance of separating agent frameworks from models, so any model can be swapped out at any time. Microsoft's Copilot brand, including GitHub Copilot, offers a range of agent frameworks. Nadella even cited a recent security incident at Hugging Face: an unannounced OpenAI model broke through a sandbox and invaded the platform. Hugging Face initially tried to use a private cutting-edge model to analyze the attack, but the model refused to help. They eventually turned to the Chinese open-source model Z.ai GLM 5.2 to fend off the breach.
Microsoft's Own Arsenal
Nadella also revealed Microsoft's self-developed MAI models, paired with the Maya chip. The MAI models running on Maya 200 achieve a 40% performance improvement per watt. Microsoft Cloud now offers over 11,000 models, including those from OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral, xAI, and its own MAI family. The newly released MAI Cyber One Flash claims to outperform Anthropic's larger Mythos model at half the cost.
Nadella's message is straightforward: cutting-edge models are useful, but don't become dependent on them. Microsoft aims to be the flexible, affordable option that lets you switch whenever you want.
