Microsoft unveils first cybersecurity AI model and Perception platform

Microsoft has officially entered the cybersecurity AI arms race with the launch of its first specialized model, MAI-Cyber-1-Flash, and a new platform called Perception. The announcements came during an event in San Francisco, as the tech giant looks to strengthen its position against competitors like Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI.

A model built for security

MAI-Cyber-1-Flash is designed specifically for cybersecurity tasks, with a focus on identifying complex vulnerabilities in codebases. It powers Microsoft's vulnerability identification and remediation tool, MDASH. According to the company, the model can help enterprises automate security processes—from discovering vulnerabilities to analyzing and fixing them.

Mustafa Suleyman, Microsoft's AI CEO, said the company has integrated MAI-Cyber-1-Flash with GPT-5.4 within the MDASH framework. In internal benchmarks, the model outperformed rivals like Gemini, GPT-5.5Cyber, GPT-5.6Sol, and Mythos5 on the Cyber Gym cybersecurity benchmark. Microsoft claims the model offers advantages in both performance and cost efficiency, and it plans to deploy it in production environments immediately.

Perception: a multi-agent approach

Alongside the model, Microsoft introduced Perception, a platform that uses a multi-agent collaboration architecture. It consists of three types of AI agents: red team, blue team, and green team. The red team agent simulates potential attack behaviors and analyzes threat paths. The blue team agent detects and classifies vulnerabilities. The green team agent handles vulnerability remediation and security optimization.

Hayete Gallot, Microsoft's Vice President of Security, explained that as hackers increasingly use AI to launch attacks, companies need to leverage AI to improve defense efficiency. Perception aims to help security teams use AI for protection at speeds and scales comparable to attackers.

David Weston, Chief Engineer of Perception, noted that previously, security teams needed multiple professionals to spend hours completing vulnerability detection and remediation. With AI agent collaboration, enterprises can now complete vulnerability discovery, prioritization, security testing, and code fixes within minutes.
