Mercor Secures $350M Funding Amid AI Data Annotation Boom

Mercor Raises $350 Million to Expand AI Data Annotation Business

Artificial intelligence startup Mercor has secured $350 million in new funding as it accelerates its pivot into the AI data annotation space. The round was led by existing investor Felicis, with participation from Benchmark, General Catalyst, and newcomer Robinhood Ventures.

From Recruitment to AI Training

Founded by three "Thiel Fellows," Mercor originally focused on recruitment decision support before shifting to its current model: "recruiting high-skilled professionals to provide training support for artificial intelligence models." This strategic move has positioned the company at the center of the booming AI training market.

Capitalizing on Industry Shifts

The funding comes amid significant turbulence in the AI data services sector. In June, Meta acquired a 49% stake in Mercor's main competitor Scale AI for $14.3 billion, creating concerns about neutrality among major AI labs.

"It is rare in the startup industry for your biggest competitor to be 'eliminated' overnight," said Mercor co-founder Adash Hiremas. Following Meta's investment, several major players including Google and OpenAI reportedly terminated collaborations with Scale AI, creating an opening Mercor quickly exploited.

Scaling Operations

Mercor currently manages:

  • Over 30,000 contract workers
  • Daily payroll exceeding $1.5 million

The workforce helps train AI systems by providing "knowledge, experience, and contextual information that cannot be captured by code alone."

The new capital will focus on three areas:

  1. Expanding the talent network
  2. Upgrading expert-matching systems
  3. Improving service delivery speed

Competitive Landscape Intensifies

The data annotation market is heating up:

  • Surge AI: Planning new funding at $1B valuation target
  • Turing AI: Valued at $2.2B in March
  • Invisible Technologies: Raised $100M at $2B+ valuation in September

With this latest funding round, Mercor enters what industry observers call "the race for unicorn status" centered on AI training talent and data services.

Key Points:

  • Mercor raises $350M led by Felicis
  • Pivoted from recruitment to AI data annotation
  • Fills void left after Meta's Scale AI investment
  • Manages network of 30K+ contractors
  • Faces growing competition in hot market
