Meituan Bounces Back: Losses Shrink as AI Partnership with Tencent Takes Shape
Meituan's Financial Turnaround
China's leading food delivery platform Meituan has made a striking financial recovery in Q1 2026, with operating losses nearly halving from 16.1 billion yuan to 6.5 billion yuan. The company reported 91 billion yuan in revenue, up 5.6% year-on-year, with its core local commerce business showing particular strength - losses there plummeted from 10 billion to just 2 billion yuan.
"We're seeing the food delivery market mature," CEO Wang Xing observed. "Competition is shifting from pure growth to efficiency and user experience." With summer - traditionally the sector's peak season - approaching, Wang expects further improvements in unit economics during Q2.
Strategic AI Moves
Simultaneously with its earnings release, Meituan announced a significant AI partnership. Its virtual assistant Xiaomei will soon integrate deeply with Tencent's Yuanbao AI app, allowing users to order food and access local services directly through Yuanbao. This creates China's first major AI-to-AI commerce gateway.
Wang framed this as part of a broader strategy: "Serving AI agents will soon be as crucial as serving human customers and merchants." The company continues developing its trillion-parameter LongCat-2.0 AI model using its vast trove of delivery data, merchant information, and customer reviews. Notably, the entire system runs on domestic computing infrastructure.
Beyond Software: Drones Take Flight
Meituan's innovation extends beyond digital realms. Its urban drone delivery network, operational in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen, has now completed over 900,000 commercial flights. This low-altitude logistics system represents one of the world's most advanced drone delivery operations.
Investment Payoffs
Perhaps most tellingly, Meituan's early bets on AI are bearing fruit. The company revealed portions of its investment portfolio for the first time:
- 12.73% stake in Li Auto
- 3.86% of AI firm Zhipu
- 7.61% of Yuzhu Technology, which just received approval for a Sci-Tech Innovation Board listing
The company also wholly owns Guangnianzhiwai and was an early investor in Moonshot AI (creator of Kimi). As AI valuations surge, these strategic investments are transforming into both financial returns and technological synergies for Meituan's core business.
