JetBrains Unveils AI Coding Assistant Junie

JetBrains, the company known for creating the IntelliJ IDE and the Kotlin programming language, has announced the launch of its first AI coding assistant, Junie. This innovative tool is designed to assist developers with everyday coding tasks, offering contextual understanding of existing projects and support for developing new applications and features.

In an evaluation using the SWE-Bench Verified benchmark, Junie successfully completed 53.6% of 500 common developer tasks. While this score is not the highest in comparison to other models—where the top performers exceed 60%, such as Weights & Biases' leading model, Programmer O1crosscheck5, which achieved 64.6%—JetBrains considers Junie's performance to be promising.

What sets Junie apart is its deep integration with JetBrains IDEs. The company emphasizes that while Junie provides assistance, human developers remain in control of the coding process. This tool aims not only to expedite development but also to enhance the quality of code produced. By leveraging the robust capabilities of JetBrains IDEs alongside large language models (LLM), Junie can generate code, perform checks, write tests, and validate their effectiveness.

In their announcement, JetBrains noted, "AI-generated code may have flaws just like code written by developers. Ultimately, Junie will not only accelerate development speed but also raise the standards of code quality."

Currently, Junie is available through an early access program for those who sign up on a waitlist. It supports IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate and PyCharm Professional IDEs on Linux and Mac systems, with plans for support in WebStorm forthcoming.

The introduction of this AI coding assistant marks a significant advancement for JetBrains in the realm of AI-assisted development. Junie's deep integration with existing IDE tools and its emphasis on maintaining human control may help it distinguish itself in the increasingly competitive market for AI coding assistants.
