JetBrains Unveils AI Coding Assistant Junie
JetBrains, the company known for creating the IntelliJ IDE and the Kotlin programming language, has announced the launch of its first AI coding assistant, Junie. In an evaluation using the SWE-Bench Verified benchmark, Junie successfully completed 53.6% of 500 common developer tasks. While this score is not the highest in comparison to other models—where the top performers exceed 60%, such as Weights & Biases' leading model, Programmer O1crosscheck5, which achieved 64.6%—JetBrains considers Junie's performance to be promising.

What sets Junie apart is its deep integration with JetBrains IDEs. The company emphasizes that while Junie provides assistance, human developers remain in control of the coding process. Currently, Junie is available through an early access program for those who sign up on a waitlist. It supports IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate and PyCharm Professional IDEs on Linux and Mac systems, with plans for support in WebStorm forthcoming.
