JD.com Bets Big on Robots with 10 Billion Yuan Plan
At this year's World Robot Conference in Beijing, JD.com didn't just show up as a spectator—it came as a global strategic partner with a bold message: the e-commerce giant is diving headfirst into the robotics industry. The company laid out a sweeping plan that touches everything from supply chains to after-sales service, with a hefty price tag to match.
A 10 Billion Yuan Commitment
The headline number is hard to ignore: JD.com says it will invest 10 billion yuan (about $1.4 billion) in robotics by 2028. The goal? Help 100 robot brands achieve annual sales exceeding 1 billion yuan each. That's not just a drop in the bucket—it's a serious bet on the sector's growth.
JD isn't starting from scratch. The company already works with more than 200 robot brands and a host of core component suppliers through its self-operated model. These partnerships span consumer and household robots, but also stretch into retail, healthcare, industry, and logistics. And it's not just domestic: JD's European arm, Joybuy, has teamed up with over 50 Chinese robot brands to push their products into overseas markets.
Building a Global Service Network
Selling robots is one thing; keeping them running is another. JD plans to build a global after-sales service network covering more than 100 countries within the next five years. That means training over 100,000 robot service engineers—a move that could create a whole new job category. The company also intends to set up 80 "RoboBase" centers, which will act as one-stop shops for robot sales, maintenance, and upgrades, essentially covering the entire lifecycle of a robot.
Data and AI: The Brains Behind the Machines
Robots are only as smart as the data they learn from. JD's JoyInside platform, which focuses on embodied intelligence, is expected to connect over 10 million devices this year, including robots. Meanwhile, JD Cloud is aiming to collect more than 10 million hours of real-world scenario data over the next two years. That data will be used to train robots, optimize their performance, and help them scale up in real-world settings.
What This Means for the Industry
As embodied intelligence and robotics move from labs to living rooms and warehouses, JD is positioning itself as a key player in the ecosystem. By integrating supply chains, building service infrastructure, and amassing data capabilities, the company hopes to create a seamless loop from production to consumption.
But it's not just about the money. JD's strategy reflects a broader trend: robots are becoming part of everyday life, and the companies that can support them—not just sell them—will likely lead the pack. With this ambitious plan, JD is signaling that it intends to be at the forefront.
