Apple has surprised developers by skipping iOS 27.1 and jumping straight to the iOS 27.2 beta. On September 16, the company rolled out the first test versions of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS. The move has fueled speculation that iOS 27.1 is being saved for the rumored foldable iPhone Duo, expected to launch on October 23 with iOS 27.1 preinstalled.

Health App: A Fresh Start

The star of the show is the completely redesigned Health app, first teased at Apple's September 9 event. It's now split into three main sections: Insights, Longevity, and Browse. Insights gives you a snapshot of your vital signs, sleep, and activity. Longevity tracks long-term trends and even calculates a "health age." Plus, there's a new self-test feature that uses your iPhone's camera to measure mobility, strength, balance, and VO2 max. The app also sports a fresh icon.

But here's the catch: Apple says the new Health app won't ship with the official iOS 27.2 release. Instead, it's coming later this year, initially only in American English. It'll also require the more advanced health sensors found in the Apple Watch Ultra 4 and Series 12.

Siri Learns New Tongues

Siri AI, previously available only in English beta, now understands French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. German is notably absent, and due to the Digital Markets Act, Siri AI still isn't available in the EU. Apple had promised these languages for October, so the early beta is a welcome surprise.

More Goodies in the Beta

The Apple TV app on iPhone and iPad now supports personal profiles, including child profiles with age restrictions (defaulting to 6+). There's also sign language translation support. FaceTime group calls can now use both front and rear cameras simultaneously—perfect for showing off your surroundings while chatting. Meanwhile, Germany, France, Italy, Poland, and Romania have a new tracking authorization request method.

Two Apple Intelligence features that were pulled before iOS 27's official release—AI reply suggestions in Messages and automatic repair of weak passwords—are expected to return during the 27.2 cycle. They're not in the first beta, but keep an eye out.
