iOS 18.2 RC 2 Brings AI Features, Volume Control, and Mail Sorting

Apple has unveiled the second release candidate (RC) for iOS 18.2 on December 9, 2024. This version comes over a month after iOS 18.1 and introduces significant features aimed at enhancing both user experience and functionality, especially with the integration of artificial intelligence (AI). Available for developers and public beta testers, this release sets the stage for the official launch, typically expected a week after the RC release.

As with any RC version, it is important to note that the iOS 18.2 RC 2 is still undergoing testing. Users are advised to install it only on secondary devices due to the possibility of bugs and battery life impact.

New Features in iOS 18.2 RC 2

The update includes several new features designed to improve daily use. The following highlights offer a glimpse into what's new:

Enhanced 'Find My' App

The 'Find My' app has been upgraded to allow users to share the location of lost items. By selecting an item through 'Find My' > 'Items,' users can enable the 'Share Item Location' feature, making it easier to locate misplaced belongings.

Mail App Improvements

The Mail app receives a major update with a new categorization system for emails. This feature helps users organize their inboxes by grouping emails into various categories, similar to the systems used by Gmail and Outlook. This will allow users to better manage their communication and keep track of important emails more effectively.

Volume Control and Restrictions

A much-requested feature, the volume slider on the lock screen, has made a return. This feature can be activated through the settings, allowing users to control the volume from the lock screen. Additionally, a volume limit function is available to protect the speakers of children's devices, ensuring they are not exposed to damaging sound levels.

AI Features Take Center Stage

As AI technology continues to evolve, Apple has incorporated several AI-driven features in iOS 18.2 RC 2. One notable addition is Genmoji, which allows users to create custom emojis based on written descriptions. The Visual Intelligence feature enhances the camera by recognizing objects and providing relevant information about them. Another intriguing addition is the Image Playground, where users can generate images simply by typing text prompts.

Siri Gets Smarter with ChatGPT

Perhaps one of the most exciting features of this update is the integration of ChatGPT into Siri. This new functionality makes Siri smarter and more responsive by tapping into ChatGPT's conversational AI capabilities, offering more sophisticated and personalized interactions with users.

These AI features are available exclusively for users of the iPhone 15 Pro, Pro Max, and iPhone 16 series for now, reflecting Apple's focus on advanced hardware capabilities for AI processing.

With the ongoing development of AI, these updates are likely to pave the way for even more intelligent and interactive features in future iOS releases.

Key Points

  1. New 'Find My' app feature allows sharing the location of lost items.
  2. The Mail app now supports multi-category email management for better organization.
  3. Siri's integration with ChatGPT makes it a smarter voice assistant. The iOS 18.2 RC 2 is a step forward in enhancing iPhone's user experience, particularly with AI-driven features. While the update shows great promise, users should wait for the final release to avoid potential bugs and performance issues.
