Horizon's AI brain goes white-box: Volkswagen's China self-driving gets a boost

Chinese autonomous driving company Horizon is putting its AI foundation models at the heart of Volkswagen's smart driving strategy in China. On July 22, the two companies announced an expanded collaboration through their joint venture Coretech (CARIZON), with a focus on AI foundation large models.

White-box licensing: A game changer

The standout feature of this deal is the licensing model. Coretech will use Horizon's advanced AI foundation model capabilities to build a unified AI driving solution for Volkswagen in China—but it's doing so under a white-box licensing model. That means Volkswagen isn't just buying a finished product; it's getting the underlying technology it can understand, adapt, and improve on its own.

This is a big shift from the typical black-box approach, where automakers get a final system but can't tweak the internals. With white-box access, Volkswagen can truly own its intelligent driving evolution.

More than just a model

Of course, a model alone doesn't drive a car. Horizon's AI foundation model will work closely with Coretech's system-on-chip C7H and the GAIA world model data platform. These components are designed to work together from the ground up, creating a powerful foundation for L3 and L4 autonomous driving.

This combination isn't just about future robotaxis or self-driving passenger cars. It will also continuously improve the advanced driver assistance systems already in production. The idea is that today's driver assistance and tomorrow's full autonomy can grow on the same technological backbone.

Deep integration with Volkswagen's CEA architecture

Perhaps the most critical piece is how this AI-powered system will integrate with Volkswagen's first regionally developed electronic architecture, known as CEA. This isn't a bolt-on solution—algorithms, chips, and vehicle electronics are being designed as one unified system.

Thanks to Volkswagen's platform strategy, these technologies can be adapted across multiple vehicle platforms and deployed on a wide range of models, both for China and some international markets. When an AI foundation model developed by a Chinese team becomes part of the DNA of global vehicles, it's clear that Volkswagen's intelligent driving story in China has entered a new chapter.
