Hinge Founder Raises $18M for AI Voice Dating App Overtone

Justin McLeod, the founder of the popular dating app Hinge, is back with a new venture that aims to shake up the online dating scene. He has raised $18 million for Overtone, a service that he insists is "not a dating app." Instead, McLeod describes it as an "AI-driven voice and audio service that offers carefully curated introductions."

The funding round was led by FirstMark Capital, Pace Capital, and Match Group—the parent company of Tinder, OkCupid, and Hinge. McLeod stepped down as CEO of Hinge last year, but he's clearly not done with the world of matchmaking.

So, what makes Overtone different? For starters, there's no swiping. Users won't spend hours mindlessly flicking through profiles. The platform uses AI to understand each person's unique story and voice, then introduces them to people who are genuinely worth connecting with. McLeod says the platform will explain why it recommends certain matches, based on relationship science, rather than leaving users in the dark.

This approach directly tackles a growing problem in the dating industry: burnout. Studies show that 78% of dating app users experience "dating fatigue," spending an average of 51 minutes per day without finding satisfying relationships. Many apps have tried using AI to generate opening lines or optimize profiles, but users often feel uncomfortable outsourcing their private conversations to a computer. Overtone's core logic is to use AI to narrow down matches, not replace actual communication.

Overtone isn't alone in this shift. New apps like Ditto and Date Drop are also experimenting with no-swipe, precise matching models to reduce the "social evaporation" caused by too many choices.

Overtone plans to launch in select regions later this year. The company has also announced that renowned relationship expert Esther Perel, Match CEO Spencer Rascoff, and leadership consultant Diana Chapman have joined its board of directors.
