Google's Argon AI Goes Global: $2 per Million Tokens

Google announced Tuesday that its flagship AI model, Argon, is now available to developers and enterprise customers worldwide. Previously, access was limited to a select group of cybersecurity professionals through Google's Fairwind program. This phased rollout balances security assessments with commercial ambitions—a sign of how carefully top-tier AI models are being handled.

What You'll Pay

Argon is available through the Google AI Studio API, Google AI Ultra and Pro subscriptions in the Gemini App, and the Antigravity agent development platform. Pricing starts at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens—but those rates double in December.

Even after the hike, Argon remains cheaper than OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra, which charges $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. Still, some Google employees have reportedly raised doubts about Argon's coding performance.

Real-World Wins

Koray Kavukcuoglu, head of Google DeepMind, says internal software engineers have used Argon to ship high-quality code faster, and the model has helped optimize Chrome's user experience. "We want to show the model's value in real engineering tasks," he said. Kavukcuoglu also highlighted Argon's combination of multimodal reasoning, agent coding, and physical understanding—capabilities that could push embodied robotics forward.

In one demo, researchers reconstructed scene layout and motion trajectories from videos of humans throwing sandbags, then passed the data to a humanoid robot. The robot hit its target seven times in a row.

The Road Ahead

Argon's global launch marks a key step in Google's AI commercialization strategy. The pricing undercuts major competitors, but performance skepticism—especially around coding—remains. With the price increase looming in December, developers may want to lock in current rates while they evaluate whether Argon lives up to the hype.

Key Points

  • Global access: Argon is now open to all developers and enterprises via Google AI Studio, Gemini App, and Antigravity.
  • Pricing: $2 per million input tokens, $10 per million output tokens; rates double in December.
  • Competitive edge: Cheaper than OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra, but coding performance faces internal doubts.
  • Real-world use: Used internally for faster coding and Chrome optimization; demo shows robot hitting seven consecutive targets.
  • Future potential: Combines multimodal reasoning, agent coding, and physical understanding for robotics research.
