Google's AI Bet: $44.9 Billion Quarter, Cloud Profits Nearly Double

Google's parent company Alphabet just released its second-quarter earnings, and the numbers are staggering. Capital expenditures hit a record $44.9 billion—double what they were a year ago. At this rate, annual spending is approaching $180 billion. But here's the twist: the money machine behind all that spending is revving up even faster.

Total revenue grew 24% year-over-year to $119.8 billion, beating analyst expectations of around $116.9 billion. The real star, though, was Google Cloud. Revenue from cloud services surged 82% to $24.8 billion, and operating profit margin nearly doubled to 35.6%. The cloud business now has a backlog of $514 billion in contracts. That's a lot of confidence from customers.

Meanwhile, Google's AI model Gemini is making strides: monthly active users hit 950 million, and the model API processes a mind-boggling 22 billion tokens per minute. When your cloud business is handling massive demand while expanding profit margins, it's no wonder Google feels confident doubling down on capital spending.

This AI infrastructure wave isn't just Google's story. Morgan Stanley predicts hyperscale cloud capital expenditures will jump from around $800 billion in 2026 to $1.2 trillion in 2027. Goldman Sachs sees $76.5 billion in 2026, rising to $1.6 trillion by 2031. McKinsey's projection is even more dramatic: total capital expenditures related to AI could reach $6.7 trillion by 2030, with data centers focused on AI alone absorbing $5.2 trillion.

When a company can double its quarterly capex and simultaneously double its cloud profit margin, it's clearly not betting on returns from just one or two quarters. It's betting on an entire infrastructure cycle rewritten by AI. And so far, that bet looks like it's paying off.
