Google opens Gemini Skills to free users, Gems to retire in November

Google is tearing down the paywall around its personalized AI tools. In a recent announcement, the company said its Gemini Skills—custom commands that were previously locked to Pro and Ultra subscribers—will now be available to all free account holders. The change means millions more people can tailor the AI to their own workflow without paying a cent.

Gems gets a new home

The shift comes with a major housekeeping move. Starting November 17, 2026, the existing Gems feature will automatically fold into the upgraded Skills system. According to Google, the new Skills keep all the flexible customization of Gems but come with a smarter underlying interaction logic.

How will it work? Instead of digging through menus, users can simply type a slash (/) followed by a command in the main chat box. That instantly activates the skill you want. It’s a small change that makes a big difference—less clicking, more doing.

What free users need to know

If you’re a free user, your previously created custom configurations won’t disappear. Google says they’ll carry over seamlessly, and you can also create fresh Skills through a dedicated link. The whole migration is designed to be smooth, so you won’t lose your setup in the transition.

Industry watchers see this as a strategic play. By lowering the barrier to personalized AI, Google likely hopes to boost user engagement and keep Gemini competitive in the crowded consumer AI market. After all, the more you customize a tool, the harder it is to walk away.

Why it matters

For everyday users, this is a win: you get pro-level customization without the pro-level price tag. For Google, it’s a bet that free access will drive loyalty and data—and maybe convince some free users to upgrade later for even more advanced features.

Key Points:

  • Gemini Skills now available to free users, not just Pro/Ultra subscribers.
  • Gems will automatically merge into Skills on November 17, 2026.
  • Use slash (/) commands in the chat box to trigger skills instantly.
  • Existing custom configurations will carry over seamlessly.
  • Move aims to lower barriers and increase Gemini’s competitiveness.
