Gizmo's Smart Study App Hits 13M Users, Secures $22M for College Push
AI Study App Gizmo Scores $22M to Reinvent College Learning
Gizmo, the AI education startup that turns boring notes into interactive study sessions, just hit two major milestones. The platform now boasts over 13 million users across 120 countries - and just landed a $22 million Series A funding round led by Shine Capital.

Gamification Meets Smart Learning
Remember when studying meant highlighters and cram sessions? Gizmo flips that script by transforming notes into something resembling your favorite mobile game. Leaderboards, streaks, and social challenges turn revision into what feels more like play than work.
"We're seeing students actually want to study," says CEO Petros Christodoulou. "When you earn points for mastering calculus or get a notification that your friend just beat your biology score, learning stops feeling like a chore."
The approach clearly resonates. While other edtech apps struggle with engagement, Gizmo users average 40 minutes per session - impressive in today's attention-starved world.
Smart Tech Gets Smarter
Gizmo's secret sauce? AI that doesn't just regurgitate information but understands learning patterns. The system tracks when you're likely to forget concepts (thank you, forgetting curve) and serves up perfect review moments.
With fresh funding, the team plans to supercharge this technology. Current staff of 7 will grow to 30, focusing on making the AI even savvier at predicting what students need to learn - and how they learn best.
The College Crusade
While Gizmo started as a general study tool, universities are now in its sights. The company plans to partner with U.S. colleges to address a growing problem: students' shrinking attention spans meeting increasingly complex material.
"Lecture halls haven't changed much in 100 years," notes Christodoulou. "But students' brains certainly have. We're rebuilding education for the TikTok generation."
Key Points:
- User explosion: 13 million learners in 120 countries since 2021 launch
- Fresh funds: $22M Series A led by Shine Capital
- Tech upgrade: AI team expanding from 7 to 30 engineers
- New frontier: Targeting higher education market with game-inspired learning
- Secret weapon: Algorithm that predicts optimal study moments
