Gemini Now Lets You Edit Files Without Leaving the Chat

Google Gemini Adds Inline Editing for Multiple File Types

Tired of downloading a file just to tweak a comma? Google feels your pain. On October 30, Gemini rolled out an update that lets you edit documents directly in the chat interface—no more bouncing between apps.

What’s new: Users can now edit and preview PDFs, Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Markdown, TXT, and various code files without leaving the conversation. PDF editing works on both web and mobile, while other formats are currently web-only.

This isn’t Google’s first rodeo with file handling in Gemini. Earlier this year, the company added file generation and download. Now, the loop is closed: generate, edit, and finalize—all in one place.

How it works: Open a document in full screen for detailed edits, or select specific text to ask Gemini questions or give instructions. For example, highlight a table and ask Gemini to turn it into a chart with one click. It’s a small tweak that could save hours in daily office work and content creation.

Previously, you could handle files through Gemini’s integration with Google Workspace (like using the sidebar in Google Docs). But this update embeds editing right into Gemini’s standalone chat. Competitor Anthropic launched a similar feature in Claude earlier this year. As mainstream AI assistants race to fill this gap, the boundaries of conversational AI as a productivity tool keep expanding.

Key Points:

  • Gemini now supports inline editing for PDFs, Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Markdown, TXT, and code files.
  • PDF editing available on web and mobile; other formats web-only for now.
  • Users can edit in full screen or select text for quick instructions.
  • Closes the generation-editing loop, boosting efficiency.
  • Follows similar moves by Anthropic’s Claude, signaling a trend in AI assistants.
