ElevenLabs Unveils GenFM for AI-Generated Podcasts

ElevenLabs Launches GenFM: A New Era for AI-Generated Podcasts

Introduction

On November 28, 2024, AI startup ElevenLabs announced the launch of its latest feature, GenFM, which empowers users to generate multi-channel podcasts by uploading various content types. This new tool is positioned as a competitor to Google's NotebookLM, aiming to enhance user engagement through innovative technology.

Feature Overview

GenFM is now available in the ElevenLabs Reader iOS app and supports 32 languages, including English, Hindi, Portuguese, Chinese, Spanish, French, German, and Japanese. Users can upload YouTube videos, text, or documents, and the app will automatically select two voices to create a personalized podcast experience.

ElevenLabs provides over ten voice options for users to choose from during the podcast creation process. Notably, as the AI prepares the generated podcast, it includes prompts like “Add some pauses” and “Insert some filler words.” Unlike many existing tools that focus on eliminating msand hs ElevenLabs opts to incorporate these human-like elements, enhancing the podcast's natural flow.

Insights from ElevenLabs

In an interview, Jack McDermott, ElevenLabs' head of mobile growth, emphasized the company's approach to podcast creation. “We discussed the extent to which we could introduce filler words or overlay sounds similar to human conversation, such as ‘um,’ ‘ah,’ ‘uh-huh,’ laughter, and breathing. Our goal is to find the right balance between natural human conversation and content usability,” he stated.

McDermott also highlighted that successful long-form podcasts typically feature fewer distractions, aiming for a more natural and deeper conversational flow. This understanding drives the company's mission to make audio narratives more accessible across various voices and languages.

Future Developments

Looking ahead, ElevenLabs plans to enhance its offerings by supporting more customization options, allowing users to merge multiple sources into generative AI podcasts. This initiative follows Google's September launch of an AI-generated conversation feature for NotebookLM, which included customizable podcast outputs a month later.

Company Expansion

In addition to the GenFM launch, ElevenLabs recently made headlines with its $11 million investment in the Polish startup ecosystem. The company has established a research and development center in Warsaw to attract local AI talent. Furthermore, ElevenLabs is expanding its operations into India, having appointed a business lead and begun building a local team. The company has also introduced conversational AI agents for its clients, reflecting its commitment to innovation in artificial intelligence.
