Edge 155 rolls out AI tab smarts and JPEG XL support

Edge 155 arrives with smarter tabs and a new image format

Microsoft has quietly rolled out the stable version of Edge 155 (build 155.0.4283.45) to desktop users. It's not a flashy overhaul, but the update packs a few upgrades that could actually change how you browse.

AI gets better at cleaning up your tab chaos

If you're the type who keeps 47 tabs open "just in case," Edge's AI tab organizer just got a major boost. The feature now doesn't just suggest groupings—it also proposes group names, visual styles, and tags that match what's actually on the pages. You can tweak these suggestions in the settings, but for many users, the default AI picks might be good enough to finally tame that messy tab bar.

JPEG XL support lands

Here's one for the photography and design crowd: Edge 155 now decodes JPEG XL images natively. That means you can view high-definition shots directly in the browser without extra plugins. JPEG XL brings progressive decoding, wide color gamut, HDR, high bit depth, and even animation support. In plain English? Sharper images, richer colors, and smoother loading—especially on slower connections.

Real-time video translation is going away

Not every change is an addition. Microsoft is phasing out the real-time video translation feature. It'll still work for now, but the company plans to deprecate it entirely in future updates. No official word on why, but it's likely a case of low adoption or shifting priorities.

Under the hood: security and developer changes

As always, Edge 155 pulls in the latest security fixes from the Chromium project. More notably, Microsoft has expanded the default block on the unload event handler to cover 100% of web pages. Developers who still rely on this outdated method for page lifecycle management should migrate to modern alternatives like visibilitychange or pagehide. It's a nudge toward better performance and reliability across the web.

What this means for you

If you're a regular user, the AI tab organizer and JPEG XL support are the headliners. The former could save you from tab overload; the latter makes browsing image-heavy sites a smoother experience. If you're a developer, the unload event change is a clear signal to update your code.

Edge 155 is rolling out now, so you may need to restart your browser to get it. As for the video translation feature—enjoy it while it lasts.
