Edge 155 rolls out AI tab grouping and JPEG XL support

Microsoft Edge 155 Stable Version Now Available

Microsoft has officially rolled out the stable desktop version of Microsoft Edge 155 (build 155.0.4283.45). The update packs several practical improvements, but two features stand out: smarter AI-powered tab organization and native support for JPEG XL images.

AI Gets Better at Taming Your Tabs

We've all been there—dozens of tabs open, and no clue where anything is. Edge 155 aims to fix that. The browser's AI now not only suggests how to group your tabs but also recommends group names, visual styles, and even tags. You can tweak these suggestions on the settings page, so you're always in control.

JPEG XL Images Finally Get Decoded

If you've ever tried to open a JPEG XL image in your browser and hit a wall, that's changing. Edge 155 can now decode JPEG XL natively. This format supports progressive decoding, wide color gamut, high dynamic range (HDR), high bit depth, and even animation. In plain English: you'll see sharper, more colorful images on web pages without any extra plugins.

What's Going Away and What's Next

Not all changes are additions. Microsoft is phasing out the real-time video translation feature, and it'll be fully deprecated in future updates. Meanwhile, Edge 155 includes the latest Chromium security patches and expands the default coverage of disabling the page unload event handler to 100%. Developers should migrate to more modern page lifecycle management mechanisms sooner rather than later.

Key Points

  • AI tab organization now suggests group names, styles, and tags for better tab management.
  • JPEG XL support enables direct decoding of high-quality images with HDR and wide color gamut.
  • Real-time video translation is being discontinued and will be removed in future updates.
  • Security updates from Chromium are included, and the unload event handler is now disabled by default for all pages.
  • Developers are encouraged to adopt updated page lifecycle practices.
