ByteDance has officially rolled out the consumer version of its Doubao Mobile Assistant, marking a significant step in the evolution of mobile AI from simple question-and-answer interactions to automated task execution. The update brings a slew of enhancements across interaction, memory, agent capabilities, and security.

A Button That Does It All

At the heart of the new experience is a dedicated AI button that supports fingerprint authentication. A single touch on the lock screen activates the assistant, while a long press triggers real-time Q&A and a double tap starts a video call. Voice activation now supports continuous conversation (still in beta), and screen recognition lets you translate, ask questions, or add calendar events directly from whatever is on your display—no more switching apps.

Memory That Actually Remembers

Perhaps the most impressive upgrade is the assistant's memory. With your permission, it can securely pull data from photos, SMS, and recordings. You can also manually save screen content, which the assistant can later retrieve using natural language. For office work, it integrates with Feishu Miaojie to convert voice to text, translate in real time, and generate summaries automatically.

Cross-App Agent Gets Smarter

The consumer version retains the "simulated clicks + tool calls" approach for cross-app operations. It can handle e-commerce price comparisons, add songs to playlists, and integrate system tools. Multitasking is supported with queuing and prioritization, and you can check progress right from the lock screen. Quick commands trigger fixed processes, but high-risk actions like payments still require your confirmation. Life services are also on board, including Doubao price comparison and CaoCao Travel (initially in Beijing and Hangzhou).

Security Locked Down

On the security front, data is processed using a combination of on-device and cloud computing, following a "minimum necessary" principle. The introduction of the SAEP protocol classifies and grades agent operations, and full-chain auditing is in place. The assistant has already earned ISO 27001, 27701, 42001, and third-level cybersecurity certifications.

What's Next?

Doubao Mobile Assistant continues its collaboration with ZTE/Nubia, and compatible models will be announced soon. Industry experts see this version as a potential daily AI entry point, thanks to its integration of system permissions, memory, and automated execution. However, challenges remain—particularly around the stability of third-party applications and authorization for sensitive operations.
