Doubao Assistant's Screen Automation: What Changes After the Comment Period?

On October 14, Doubao Mobile Assistant announced the end of a 30-day public comment period for its Screen Automation Execution Protocol (SAEP). The protocol, which launched alongside the consumer version of Doubao Mobile Assistant on September 14, sets the rules for how the assistant can automate screen operations on third-party apps. The Nubia NaviX Ultra, released on September 16, was the first device to feature this version.

The Initial Rules: A Cautious Start

During the comment period, Doubao Assistant played it safe. It only automated operations on system-built-in apps, ByteDance's own apps, and third-party apps that had explicitly opted into the protocol. Everyone else? Left alone by default.

What Happens Now: Gradual Rollout

With the comment period over, the assistant will begin granting operation permissions to apps that neither responded to the email nor joined the protocol. But it's not a free-for-all. Permissions will be released gradually, based on the risk level of each app. Apps that clearly refused to participate will never be included—no exceptions. Developers can still declare refusal at any time, and the assistant will promptly disable the relevant operations. The current list of refused apps is available through official channels and will be updated regularly.

Why It Matters

This move signals a step toward broader automation, but with guardrails. For users, it means more apps will eventually work seamlessly with Doubao Assistant—but only if they meet safety criteria. For developers, it's a reminder that opting out is still an option, and the door remains open to join later.

As the rollout unfolds, keep an eye on which apps get the green light first. The risk-based approach suggests that high-stakes apps (like banking or healthcare) might take longer to gain automation permissions. For now, Doubao Assistant is treading carefully—and that's probably a good thing.

Key Points

  • Comment period ended: Doubao Mobile Assistant's SAEP 30-day public comment period concluded on October 14.
  • Gradual permissions: Third-party apps that didn't respond or join will get operation permissions based on risk level.
  • Refusal respected: Apps that explicitly refused will never be automated; developers can opt out anytime.
  • Transparency: The refusal list is publicly available and regularly updated.
  • Impact: Users can expect more automated app interactions over time, but with safety checks in place.
