Doubao Assistant's Screen Automation: Public Comment Ends, Third-Party Access Expands

On October 14, Doubao Mobile Assistant announced the end of a 30-day public comment period for its Screen Automation Execution Protocol (SAEP). The protocol, launched alongside the consumer version of Doubao Mobile Assistant on September 14, sets the rules for how the assistant can perform automated operations on apps. The first device to ship with this version, the Nubia NaviX Ultra, hit shelves on September 16.

What Changes After the Comment Period?

During the comment period, the assistant only automated tasks within system built-in apps, ByteDance's own apps, and third-party apps that had explicitly agreed to join the protocol. All other apps were off-limits by default.

Now that the comment period is over, the assistant will gradually grant operation permissions to apps that neither responded to the email nor joined the protocol—but it won't be a free-for-all. Permissions will be rolled out based on each app's risk level. Apps that clearly refused will never be included in the operation scope. Developers can still declare refusal at any time, and the assistant will promptly disable the relevant operations. The current list of refused apps is available through official channels and will be updated regularly.

Why It Matters

This move signals a step toward broader automation on mobile devices, but with safeguards. By granting permissions gradually and respecting explicit refusals, Doubao aims to balance convenience with user control and developer consent. For users, it means more apps could soon be automated—but only if they don't pose high risks. For developers, the door remains open to opt out, ensuring they retain a say in how their apps are used.

Key Points

  • Public comment period for SAEP ended October 14 after 30 days.
  • Third-party apps that didn't respond will gradually get screen automation permissions based on risk level.
  • Apps that explicitly refused will never be automated; developers can still opt out anytime.
  • Refused apps list is available officially and updated regularly.
  • Nubia NaviX Ultra was the first device with the consumer version of Doubao Mobile Assistant.
