Disney has finally filled a long-vacant seat at the top of its tech org chart. On September 18, the company announced that Kalpinder Anand, former CEO of Character.AI, will become its first Chief Technology Officer, effective October 2. He'll report directly to CEO Josh D'Amaro and take the title of Senior Executive Vice President.

D'Amaro, who has led Disney for just a few months, has made no secret of his tech ambitions. The message is clear: Disney doesn't just want to tell great stories—it wants to build the tools that tell them better. Anand's mandate covers enterprise technology, infrastructure, data, and AI platforms, plus product and engineering. In plain English, he's the guy who'll make sure Disney's various tech teams stop working in silos and start moving as one.

A Resume That Reads Like a Tech Who's Who

Anand isn't your typical corporate hire. Before Character.AI, he did stints at fintech firm Brex and at Facebook (now Meta). But it's his most recent role that raises eyebrows—and not just because of his credentials.

Character.AI, which lets users create and chat with AI-powered characters, grew rapidly under Anand's watch. Disney noted that the platform built one of the world's most active consumer AI communities while keeping user trust and safety front and center. That experience—blending infrastructure, consumer tech, and AI—is exactly what D'Amaro says Disney needs.

"Kalpinder has rare comprehensive experience in infrastructure, consumer technology, and AI," D'Amaro said in a statement. He'll be "an important member of Disney's senior management team," helping push three priorities: great storytelling as the North Star, technology serving creativity, and operating as "One Disney."

Wait—Didn't Disney Sue These Guys?

Here's where things get interesting. Last year, Disney sent Character.AI a cease-and-desist letter, demanding it stop using Disney's copyrighted characters without permission. Now Disney is hiring the person who ran that very platform—and reportedly bringing some of his former team along too.

It's a classic case of "if you can't beat them, hire them." Or maybe it's just smart business: rather than fight the AI wave, Disney is bringing in someone who knows how to ride it.
