Deezer Launches AI Music Detection as Uploads Surge

According to a recent announcement from the Deezer platform, the music streaming service is witnessing a significant surge in AI-generated music, with over 10,000 tracks being uploaded daily. In light of this trend, Deezer is actively developing a suite of AI music detection and tagging tools to better identify these AI-created contents.

In an official statement, Deezer, which is headquartered in Paris, disclosed the current capabilities of its AI music detection tool. This tool can identify music generated by popular AI creations such as Suno and Udio. Furthermore, it is designed to evolve and detect other generative models as they emerge, provided it receives the relevant data samples. Notably, Deezer has indicated that the detection system will not rely on specific datasets, allowing it to adapt to the evolving landscape of AI music creation.

Currently, AI-generated music comprises approximately 10% of Deezer's daily content uploads. Despite Deezer's smaller user base compared to industry giants like Spotify and Apple Music, the platform sees around 100,000 new songs released each day. According to statistics from Luminate, the average daily number of new recordings on digital music platforms in 2024 is about 99,000, reflecting a 4.4% decrease from the previous year. In contrast, Spotify boasts over 100 million music pieces available, while Deezer has surpassed 120 million tracks in its library.

However, Deezer has observed that a significant number of the AI-generated tracks are not being actively played by users. This trend raises concerns about the potential dilution of the overall music catalog quality and the risk of fraudulent activities. In response to these challenges, Deezer's executive, Alexis Lanternier, emphasized that while generative AI holds promise for enhancing music creation and consumption, its implementation must be managed carefully to safeguard the rights and income of artists and songwriters. To this end, Deezer plans to exclude completely AI-generated content from its algorithms and editorial recommendations.

As AI music creation continues to gain traction, the challenge of distinguishing between human-made and AI-generated works will become increasingly critical for major streaming platforms. Deezer's proactive measures may offer valuable insights into how the industry can strike a balance between protecting creative rights and fostering technological innovation. This developing narrative is poised to be a focal point of industry discussions in the future.
