Copilot Notebooks Gets a Big Upgrade: Now It Can Actually Do Your Work

Microsoft is turning Copilot Notebooks into something more than just a digital filing cabinet. The company announced a batch of new features—task delegation, in-place editing for Office documents, and interactive reports—that push the tool from an AI-powered information organizer into a space where actual work gets done. The updates are rolling out gradually through the Frontier Preview Program as of October 2026.

From Storing Information to Getting Things Done

Copilot Notebooks already had a knack for pulling together documents, emails, and meeting notes. It could answer questions, whip up study guides, and even generate audio summaries. But now, you can delegate tasks directly to Copilot and set up recurring automations—think daily briefings or weekly status reports. For a project manager, that means progress reports can be generated automatically from project files and meeting records, cutting down the manual scramble.

Editing Office Files Without Leaving Your Notebook

Here's a feature that might save you a few Alt-Tabs: you can now open and edit Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files right inside the notebook. No need to jump to the separate Office apps. And the new interactive report feature brings in visual charts and filters, so you can dig into the data behind your notes without exporting anything.

More Ways to Listen and Learn

Microsoft also expanded audio summaries to include Teams conversations and Outlook emails. Plus, there are two new modes—"Comment" and "Debate"—that let you see notebook content from different angles. Copilot can even suggest which documents or presentations to generate based on what you already have, and you can pick between models from OpenAI and Anthropic.

How It Stacks Up Against Gemini Notebook

Compared to Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM), which sticks mostly to information retrieval and knowledge understanding, Microsoft is clearly aiming for something broader. By adding content editing, periodic task automation, and interactive data analysis, Copilot Notebooks is doubling down on its integration with the Microsoft 365 ecosystem. It's a play to make the notebook not just a place to think, but a place to act.

Key Points

  • Task delegation: Hand off tasks to Copilot and set up recurring automations like daily briefings or weekly reports.
  • In-place editing: Open and edit Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files directly within notebooks.
  • Interactive reports: Use visual charts and filters to explore underlying data.
  • Expanded audio summaries: Now supports Teams conversations and Outlook emails, with new "Comment" and "Debate" modes.
  • Model choice: Pick between OpenAI and Anthropic models.
  • Ecosystem play: Aims to strengthen integration with Microsoft 365, going beyond Gemini Notebook's focus on retrieval.
