Claude Cowork Goes Mobile: Anthropic's AI Sidekick Now Works Anywhere

Anthropic has expanded its AI assistant Claude Cowork beyond the desktop, releasing web and mobile versions for Max subscription users. The move turns what was once a coding-focused desktop app into a full-fledged, cross-platform productivity tool.

Originally launched as a desktop application, Cowork was primarily used for programming assistance and basic knowledge tasks. Now, users can create tasks on their computers, track progress on their phones, and receive feedback on the go. Even when the laptop is closed, background tasks continue running until a key decision point requires user input. This "always-on" feature makes Cowork feel less like a tool and more like a colleague who never sleeps.

Anthropic's expansion reflects a broader trend in AI office software: the battle is no longer about who has the smartest chatbot, but about who can weave AI most seamlessly into daily workflows. To back up the move, Anthropic released usage data from 600,000 organizations and 1.2 million conversations.

The numbers are revealing. While "code writing" gets the most buzz, Cowork's real-world use leans heavily toward mundane business tasks. The largest category—33.4% of all usage—is "business process operations," which includes integrating scattered information into reports, organizing onboarding checklists, reconciling accounts, and maintaining spreadsheets. These tasks primarily serve finance, HR, and administrative roles. Software development, by contrast, accounts for only 8.7%.

This data suggests that the biggest demand for AI in the office isn't for writing code, but for handling the endless stream of small, repetitive tasks that bog down knowledge workers. By making Cowork available on mobile and web, Anthropic is betting that the future of AI office tools lies in being everywhere, always ready to help with the next chore.
