ChatGPT Voice Mode Now Lets You Pick GPT-5.6 Sol or GPT-6 Astra
ChatGPT Voice Mode Gets a Big Upgrade: Pick Your Model, Set Your Reasoning
OpenAI's voice product manager, Atty Eleti, has announced a major overhaul of ChatGPT Voice. The headline change? You can now freely choose which model and how much reasoning depth you want during a voice conversation. That means Pro subscribers can tap directly into heavy hitters like GPT-5.6 Sol or GPT-6 Astra.
But how does it actually work? According to OpenAI, every time you trigger a web search or a complex logical task mid-conversation, the voice system automatically hands things over to the specified powerful model. Each handoff counts as a separate message to the model. So while voice chat feels more seamless and intelligent than ever, it also puts new pressure on the overall quota system.

Usage Limits Get a Makeover
Alongside the model upgrade, OpenAI has simplified the daily usage rules for GPT-Live. The new plan breaks down into four tiers:
- Go plan: Up to 3 hours of GPT-Live-1mini. The basic GPT-Live-1 is no longer included.
- Plus plan: Up to 3 hours of GPT-Live-1.
- Pro plan ($100/month): Up to 15 hours of GPT-Live-1.
- Top-tier Pro ($200/month): Unlimited GPT-Live-1.
And here's a nice touch: if Plus or Pro users run out of voice quota, the system won't silently drop them down to the lightweight GPT-Live mini anymore. That automatic downgrade is gone.
Out with the Old, In with the New
With the new mechanism in place, the original three voice intelligence levels—Instant, Medium, and High—have been officially retired. It's a clear shift toward a new era where you're in the driver's seat, choosing your model and reasoning depth on the fly.
So what does this mean for you? If you're a Pro user, you now have a lot more control and power at your fingertips. If you're on a lower tier, you'll want to keep an eye on those hours. Either way, voice chat just got a whole lot smarter—and a bit more complicated.
