ChatGPT Traffic Climbs to 3.7 Billion; NotebookLM Gains Traction

According to recent data from Similarweb, ChatGPT experienced a significant increase in global traffic, reaching 3.7 billion visits in October 2024. This figure represents a 17.2% month-over-month increase and an impressive 115.9% year-over-year growth.

Sustained Growth for ChatGPT

Since its transition from chat.openai.com to chatgpt.com in April 2024, ChatGPT has demonstrated remarkable growth momentum. Prior growth rates were recorded at 8% and 18.7%, but October saw a notable acceleration, particularly with a 19% increase in daily active users of its mobile app in the United States. The introduction of the ChatGPT search feature is anticipated to further enhance user engagement and traffic numbers.

NotebookLM's Rapid Development

In parallel with ChatGPT's growth, Google's NotebookLM has also been on an upward trajectory. The platform's visits surged to 31.5 million in October, reflecting an over 200% year-over-year increase and marking its second consecutive month of triple-digit growth.

The spike in NotebookLM's traffic can be attributed to its recently launched AI podcast feature, which features two synthesized voices discussing document content. The platform's social media demo videos quickly gained traction, drawing significant interest from users. While NotebookLM's traffic is still considerably lower than ChatGPT's, its rapid growth is noteworthy.

Comparative Focus of the Platforms

The two platforms cater to different needs: NotebookLM emphasizes document interaction, while ChatGPT is centered around conversational capabilities. Additionally, Google is set to release Gemini 2.0 in December, along with a web collaboration assistant called Jarvis.

In October, the current Gemini website recorded 291.6 million visits, a 6.2% increase from September. Other AI services also reported growth, with Microsoft's Copilot seeing an 87.6% increase to 69.4 million visits, partly driven by the integration of Bing Chat.

Platforms like Perplexity and Claude reported a 25.5% increase in visits, with year-over-year growth rates of 199.2% and 394.9%, respectively. Although these growth figures may seem modest in isolation, the substantial investments in generative AI indicate that future growth could accelerate significantly.

Conclusion

The competitive landscape of AI platforms continues to evolve, with both ChatGPT and NotebookLM showcasing their unique strengths and growth potentials. As user engagement rises and new features are introduced, the dynamics of AI interaction are set to transform further.
