ChatGPT Holds Lead in AI Race as Claude Makes Stunning 130% Leap

U.S. AI Chatbot Market Shows Surging Growth and Shifting Dynamics

New March 2026 figures from Comscore paint a picture of both stability and rapid change in America's AI assistant market. While industry leader ChatGPT maintains its comfortable lead, the real story lies in the dramatic gains by challengers - particularly Anthropic's Claude, which grew faster than any major competitor.

The Unshaken Leader

OpenAI's ChatGPT continues its reign with 33.86 million monthly desktop users in the U.S., an 18.9% increase from February. This represents nearly three-quarters of the total market, proving the first-mover advantage remains strong even as competition intensifies.

"ChatGPT has become almost synonymous with AI chatbots for many Americans," notes tech analyst Miranda Chen. "But what's fascinating is how quickly users are exploring alternatives once they get comfortable with the technology."

Challengers Emerge

Google's Gemini secured second place with 10.66 million users (up 29.1%), while Microsoft's Copilot saw the second-highest growth at 44.4%, reaching 5.02 million users. But the standout performance came from Claude, which nearly doubled its February numbers with a 130.1% surge to 2.66 million users.

This explosive growth propels Claude past several competitors to claim fourth place, establishing it as the most serious challenger to the established "big three." Industry watchers attribute Claude's success to its focus on conversational quality and safety features that appeal to privacy-conscious users.

What's Driving the Boom?

The overall market expanded to 44.4 million unique desktop users, up 21% month-over-month. Several factors contribute to this rapid adoption:

  • Workplace integration as businesses increasingly adopt AI tools
  • Improved user experience making AI assistants more approachable
  • Media coverage sparking curiosity among late adopters

"We're past the early adopter phase," explains Chen. "Now we're seeing mainstream users—parents, teachers, small business owners—finding practical daily uses for these tools."

Key Points

  • ChatGPT remains dominant with 33.86M U.S. desktop users (+18.9%)
  • Claude shows fastest growth at 130.1%, reaching 2.66M users
  • Total market hits 44.4M users, up 21% from February
  • Google Gemini (10.66M) and Microsoft Copilot (5.02M) maintain strong positions
  • Market expansion suggests AI becoming standard productivity tool

The data reveals an industry in flux—while established players maintain leads, rapid growth among challengers suggests users are becoming more willing to explore alternatives as they gain AI experience. With such dramatic monthly changes, the rankings could look very different by summer.
