Capital One Uses AI to Transform Car Sales
Capital One’s AI-Driven Automotive Revolution
At the recent VB Transform conference, Milind Naphade, Head of AI Infrastructure Technology at Capital One, unveiled how the company is leveraging intelligent agents to revolutionize its automotive business. The project, initiated 15 months ago, aims to create AI agents capable of human-like communication and problem-solving.

Designing Intelligent Agents for Risk Management
Capital One drew from its financial services expertise to design these agents. Naphade emphasized the importance of risk management, leading to the creation of an evaluation agent trained on company policies. This agent monitors other AI agents, rolling back processes when issues arise. The structure functions like an expert team, with each agent specializing in different areas.
Boosting Dealer Performance
The AI platform primarily supports auto dealers, helping customers find cars and loans. Consumers can browse inventory for test drives, while dealers benefit from a 55% increase in key metrics like customer engagement and sales leads. The system enables 24/7 customer service, including late-night assistance via chat.
Data and Model Optimization
Capital One’s vast data resources required careful integration of context and model architecture. Naphade’s team used techniques like model distillation to refine the agents. A major focus was developing "understanding agents" capable of complex information interpretation. Rigorous testing ensured the system’s effectiveness and safety before launch.
Challenges and Future Applications
Naphade acknowledged the lack of precedents posed challenges during development. Despite this, Capital One plans to expand the technology into the travel industry, particularly for customer interactions. With its new JFK Airport lounge and popular travel rewards card, the company aims to further innovate in this space.
