ByteDance's Revenue Jumps 30%, But AI Spending Eats Into Profits

ByteDance is growing fast — but it's also spending faster. In the first half of 2026, the company's revenue climbed 30% compared to a year earlier. Yet its net profit margin fell to about 16.7%, continuing a slide that began in 2023, when the margin stood at 26%. The year after, it dropped to 21%. ByteDance declined to comment on the numbers.

So what's driving the squeeze? Artificial intelligence. The company has built its own large language and video models, runs Douyin (China's most popular mobile chatbot app), and is pushing hard into AI cloud services for enterprise customers. Its Seedance video generation model ranks among the world's best. All that innovation doesn't come cheap.

Overseas Revenue Hits a New High

On the bright side, ByteDance's overseas business is booming. While TikTok still brings in the bulk of foreign revenue, its share now tops 30% of total revenue — a record. Back in 2024, that figure was 25%. In 2025, overseas revenue grew nearly 50%, far outpacing domestic growth of around 20%. That momentum carried into 2026.

The AI Arms Race Gets Expensive

To keep funding its AI ambitions, ByteDance recently secured a $30 billion loan from banks — the largest in its history. But it's not alone in this spending spree. Alibaba is seeking about $10 billion through a share issue to build AI infrastructure. Zhipu AI just launched a $5 billion equity and convertible bond offering. Clearly, Chinese tech giants have entered a capital-intensive phase.

The question now: can ByteDance's revenue growth outrun its AI bills? For now, investors are watching closely.

Key Points:

  • Heavy AI investment is pressuring profits, continuing a downward trend since 2023.
  • Overseas revenue now exceeds 30% of total revenue, a new record.
  • ByteDance secured a $30 billion loan to fund AI expansion.
  • Competitors Alibaba and Zhipu AI are also raising billions for AI.
