ByteDance's Doubao Assistant Spins Off New App Called Xiaodu

ByteDance is quietly making a big move in artificial intelligence. Its Doubao personal assistant project—known internally as "Spell"—has officially been named Xiaodu and will soon launch as a standalone app. The name was locked in earlier this summer, and the product is now in intensive internal testing. A public release date hasn't been announced, and the final version could shift based on test results.

The path to this point has been steady. Back in December 2025, ByteDance showed off a preview of its mobile assistant on a Nubia engineering prototype built with ZTE. Then, in September 2026, the consumer version arrived, initially landing on the Nubia NaviX Ultra. Now, Xiaodu is set to break free from those hardware partnerships.

Industry watchers see the independent app as a natural next step. It takes the core personal agent capabilities ByteDance has been building on phones and opens them up to a wider audience. In plain terms: you won't need a specific phone brand or deep system integration to use it. Just download the app and get a full-featured AI assistant.

That's a meaningful shift. For users, it means more flexibility and a consistent experience across devices. For ByteDance, it's a chance to gather broader usage data and refine the assistant outside the constraints of a single manufacturer. The company hasn't shared details on features or pricing, but the direction is clear—Xiaodu is aiming for a full-scenario intelligent ecosystem.
