Apple to Open AI Models for Developers in iOS 19

Apple is gearing up to grant third-party developers access to its artificial intelligence (AI) models in the upcoming iOS 19 update, according to a Bloomberg report by Mark Gurman. This strategic shift could redefine how apps leverage AI across Apple's ecosystem.

The tech giant is developing a software development kit (SDK) and frameworks that will let creators integrate Apple Intelligence—the company's suite of large language models—into their applications. The announcement is likely to take center stage at this year's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), scheduled for June 9.

Currently, Apple Intelligence powers select features like notification summaries, text editing tools, and basic image generation in iOS and macOS. The new developer program would expand these capabilities significantly. However, initial access will be limited to smaller AI models that operate on-device rather than cloud-based systems.

Insiders reveal the initiative carries the codename Solarium, drawing inspiration from Vision Pro's visionOS interface design principles. While exciting for developers, WWDC's main attractions will still be the latest versions of iPhone, iPad, and Mac operating systems.

Today's developer tools only permit limited AI integrations—notification management, writing assistants, Genmoji, and Image Playground features. The core Apple Foundation Models remain off-limits. This upcoming expansion mirrors Apple's successful App Store strategy, positioning its OS as the foundation for next-generation AI applications.

The company had originally planned earlier releases for related developer tools like enhanced App Intents—features allowing precise Siri-controlled app operations. These updates are now expected throughout the iOS 19 development cycle between September 2025 and 2026.

Key Points

  1. Apple will open AI model access to developers in iOS 19 through new SDKs
  2. Initial focus will be on smaller local models rather than cloud-based systems
  3. The move aims to replicate App Store success in the AI domain
  4. Announcement expected at WWDC on June 9 under project "Solarium"
  5. Full rollout of developer tools may extend through 2026
