Apple's Smart Home Play: Siri AI Takes on Amazon and Google

Apple is finally making a serious move into the smart home arena, and it's bringing a smarter Siri along for the ride. At a recent event dubbed "Welcome Home," the company unveiled four new products, all designed to work seamlessly with the upgraded Siri AI, which now runs on Apple Foundation Models. This marks Apple's most aggressive push yet into a market long dominated by Amazon and Google.

Apple HomeView: The Centerpiece

The star of the show is the Apple HomeView, Apple's first-ever smart display. It sports a 7-inch Liquid Retina screen mounted on an arched speaker base with a stainless steel hinge, so you can tilt it to just the right angle. The real magic, though, is its facial recognition: up to six users can be identified, and the display automatically shows personalized home screens, widgets, and private apps like Messages and Calendar when your iPhone or iPad is nearby and unlocked. Shared albums and music remain open to everyone. At $299, it comes in silver, starlight white, rose pink, and space gray, with a wall-mount version at the same price. Pre-orders are live in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, India, and New Zealand, with a November 13 release. (Singapore gets it October 15.) Sorry, EU—regulations around Siri AI mean you'll have to wait.

HomePod mini: Second Generation

It's been three years since the last HomePod mini, and the new version brings some welcome upgrades. The spherical design remains, but inside you'll find the S10 chip, which enables computational audio for real-time adjustments to dynamic range and volume. Pair four of them with the new Apple TV 4K, and you've got a four-channel surround system that auto-calibrates to your room. It also works as a Mac speaker, a home hub, and can even recognize smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and announce visitors via facial recognition. At $149, it comes in pink, green, blue, white, and midnight black, launching October 30. One caveat: Siri AI won't be available at launch, but a future update will enable it.

Apple TV 4K: Fourth Generation

The new Apple TV 4K brings Siri AI right to your TV screen. Powered by the A19 chip, it boasts up to 50% faster CPU performance and double the GPU power compared to its predecessor, plus a dedicated AV1 decoder. The remote now includes a "Precise Search" feature for finding what you want. But the real story is interaction: three far-field microphones let you wake Siri without touching the remote, and you can ask follow-up questions with context. Results pop up in small windows, so they don't interrupt your show. Yours for $299 (or $49.83/month), with pre-orders open and a November 13 release.

Apple Home Collection: Smart Accessories

Apple has teamed up with LG and Schneider Electric for a range of smart home devices that connect instantly and are managed through the native Home app. LG's smart security camera lineup includes a wired video doorbell ($249.95), floodlight camera ($399.95), outdoor camera accessories ($299.95), and indoor camera ($199.95). They support up to 2.5K recording, person and pet detection, and offer free 10-day history via iCloud+. There's also an LG smart door lock ($349.95) with ultra-wideband tech that unlocks as you approach—and it works offline. Smart thermostats and temperature/humidity sensors from LG and Schneider Electric feature adaptive temperature adjustments. These will roll out starting in December, and Apple retail stores in the US will offer ADT professional installation.

Key Points

  • Siri AI everywhere: The upgraded Siri, built on Apple Foundation Models, powers all four product lines.
  • HomeView display: A 7-inch smart display with facial recognition for up to six users, priced at $299.
  • HomePod mini (2nd gen): New S10 chip, computational audio, and surround sound pairing, available October 30 for $149.
  • Apple TV 4K (4th gen): A19 chip, far-field mics, and Siri AI integration, launching November 13 for $299.
  • Smart accessories: LG and Schneider Electric devices for security, locks, and climate control, coming in December.

Apple's smart home ecosystem is finally taking shape. But with Amazon and Google already entrenched, the question is: will Siri AI be enough to make you switch?
