Apple AI Leader Yang Ke Departs for Meta Amid Siri Overhaul
Apple Loses Another AI Leader to Meta Platforms
Bloomberg reports that Yang Ke, head of Apple's artificial intelligence search department, is departing the company to join competitor Meta Platforms. This transition occurs during a critical period for Apple as it intensifies development of its AI product line, including a planned major update for Siri.
Key Role in Siri Development
Ke previously led Apple's Answers, Knowledge, and Information (AKI) team, which focused on developing new features to make Siri more competitive with conversational AI tools like ChatGPT. The team worked specifically on granting Siri the ability to access and utilize online content - functionality that represents a significant evolution for Apple's voice assistant.
The AKI team plays a central role in Apple's planned Siri overhaul expected later this year.
Ongoing Talent Drain in Apple's AI Division
Ke's departure follows several other high-profile exits from Apple's AI teams:
- Members of the "Apple Foundation Model" research team
- Former executives Robby Walker and Ruoming Pang, who also joined Meta
The pattern highlights the intense competition among tech giants for top AI talent as companies race to develop next-generation artificial intelligence capabilities.
Leadership Transition Plan
Following Ke's departure, leadership of the AKI team will transition to Benoit Dupin, deputy to Apple's senior vice president of machine learning and AI strategy John Giannandrea. This reorganization comes as Apple prepares what industry observers expect will be significant AI announcements at its upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference.
Key Points:
- Yang Ke led development of enhanced capabilities for Siri through the AKI team
- This marks at least the third high-profile departure from Apple's AI division to Meta in recent months
- The move comes ahead of expected major AI announcements from Apple later this year
- Leadership transitions occur during crucial development phase for Siri upgrades
