Anthropic Just Sledged Claude Chat and Cowork Into One

Anthropic is tearing down the wall between its chat and collaboration tools. The company announced it will merge Claude Cowork with the standard version of Claude Chat into one unified platform, letting the AI decide when to call tools like web search, file analysis, code execution, spreadsheets, reports, and presentations based on how complex your task is.

In plain terms: no more bouncing between a casual chat window and a separate "work mode" just to get something done.

What Actually Changes

Claude Cowork launched earlier this year with a clear pitch—handle the messy, multi-step jobs that a simple chat can't. After the integration, those complex tasks keep running in the cloud even if you close your laptop, exit the mobile app, or walk away from Claude entirely. You can also queue up several tasks at once and check their progress from your phone.

Alongside that, Anthropic is pulling Claude Docs, Claude Slides, and Claude Design straight into the chat interface. That means you can draft a document, build a presentation, or tweak a chart without ever leaving the conversation.

The Fine Print Nobody Asked For

If you're already a Cowork user, your tasks, projects, contacts, skills, portfolios, and files will migrate automatically. But here's the catch: once you upgrade to the unified interface, there's no going back to the old split between chat and collaboration modes.

The new experience also has some rough edges. "Add from GitHub" isn't supported yet, and you can't continue tasks from previous conversation nodes. Early Cowork tasks won't show up in search—they're tucked away in the "Recent" section. Private chats still exist, but you can't create files or run code inside them. Dispatch, for now, is limited to existing users.

Who Gets It First

The unified experience rolls out first to Pro and Max users on web, desktop, and mobile. Team and Free users will follow. Enterprise customers get at least 30 days' notice before anything changes on their end.

It's a bold consolidation, and one that bets users would rather have one flexible workspace than two specialized ones. Whether that bet pays off depends on how smoothly Anthropic irons out those early limitations.
