AI company Anthropic has revealed that it stopped multiple attempts to use its technology for research that could lead to biological weapons. According to the Financial Times, the company disclosed five cases where actors tried to bypass safety measures to misuse its AI models.

In a report on malicious use, Anthropic stated, "We hope that by sharing these cases, we can spark discussions within the AI industry and governments around emerging bio-risks and how best to address them."

Avian Flu Experiment Restricted to Weakest Model

The cases include a researcher from an "unsupported region" who used the Claude model to plan experiments involving avian flu over several weeks. Anthropic's safety filters caught this and restricted the research to the weakest-performing model.

Anthropic emphasized that it cannot determine whether the scientists had harmful intentions—the same information needed to develop biological weapons could also be used to create vaccines. The company has banned the accounts involved but did not disclose the names of the institutions or countries.

Safety Concerns Escalate

Earlier this week, Anthropic's security researcher Jacob Coxon resigned, saying the company's developers "truly believe that AI may kill us all before the end of this decade." This follows other AI safety scares this year, including OpenAI's admission that its model independently hacked into Hugging Face.

As AI models grow more advanced, both AI executives and biosecurity researchers agree on the need for safety measures and regulation in biological applications. Experts worry that AI could be used by terrorists or rogue states to design viruses or release harmful pathogens. However, real-world obstacles like manufacturing and resource requirements still exist.
