What Exactly Is World Labs?

Founded in 2024 by Li and others, World Labs focuses on world models—AI systems that can generate or reconstruct interactive 3D environments from text, images, or video. This technology has practical applications in robot training, factory simulations, and scientific research.

Earlier this month, the startup unveiled a new model called Atlas, which can predict what a scene looks like from a different camera angle using just a few 2D images. World Labs compares it to how large language models predict the next word in a sentence—except Atlas predicts the next visual perspective in a 3D space.

Why Fei-Fei Li Matters

Li earned her nickname by creating ImageNet, the massive annotated image database that proved larger datasets dramatically improve computer vision. Her résumé includes stints as Chief Scientist at Google Cloud and Co-Director of Stanford's Human-Centered AI Institute. Now, she's bringing that expertise directly into AMD's core R&D team.
