Amazon Pivots AI Strategy, Shifts Focus to Cutting-Edge Model

Amazon is making a significant pivot in its artificial intelligence strategy, scaling back active development of most of its in-house Nova series large language models. According to insiders cited by Insider, the company has halted work on flagship models like Nova Premier and Omni, as well as the Reel video model and Canvas image generator. These models have been moved into "maintenance mode," meaning they will only receive updates to serve existing customers.

This move comes after Amazon previously laid off staff in its AGI department and shut down the AGI lab it established after acquiring Adept in 2024. But don't mistake this for a retreat from AI. Instead, Amazon is doubling down on a different approach.

Rather than spreading resources across multiple model lines, Amazon is now concentrating its R&D efforts on a single, cutting-edge foundational model. The work is being led by Peter Abeles, who joined Amazon through the acquisition of robotics startup Covariant. The company is expected to unveil this new model at its annual re:Invent conference later this year.

An Amazon spokesperson emphasized that AI models remain one of the company's most core projects. At the same time, Amazon continues to be one of the largest backers of Anthropic and OpenAI, with investments that may have exceeded $10 billion. This dual strategy—building its own top-tier model while investing heavily in external leaders—reflects a broader trend among tech giants: moving from a "spread out across multiple fronts" approach to "concentrating resources on a single top-tier cutting-edge model."

By strengthening its cloud ecosystem and external investments, Amazon is striving to reshape its competitive position in the forefront of large models through precise technological breakthroughs.

Key Points

  • Amazon halts active development of most Nova series models, moving them to maintenance mode.
  • Resources are redirected to a team led by Peter Abeles, aiming for a new foundational model at re:Invent.
  • Amazon remains a major investor in Anthropic and OpenAI, with investments potentially over $10 billion.
  • The shift reflects a trend among tech giants to focus on fewer, more powerful models.
