Alibaba reshapes AI strategy with new research unit and business team

Alibaba Bets Big on AI with Major Restructuring

In a bold move to sharpen its artificial intelligence focus, Alibaba Group announced sweeping changes to its organizational structure today. The Chinese tech giant is merging its Tongyi Large Model Business Unit with the Future Life Lab while establishing two new entities - the Token Foundry Business Unit and the AI Future Research Institute.

Leadership Shuffle Signals Strategic Priorities

The restructuring puts Zhou Jingren, one of Alibaba's most senior partners, in the spotlight. Zhou, who previously led development of the Qwen series models, now takes on the dual role of Chief Scientist and head of the newly created research institute. His promotion reflects the company's emphasis on long-term AI breakthroughs.

"Having Zhou oversee both fundamental research and our flagship models creates powerful synergies," said an Alibaba spokesperson. "His team turned Qwen into a global contender - now he's getting the resources to push boundaries even further."

Commercial Push Gains Momentum

On the business side, executive Zheng Bo will lead Alibaba's Happy Horse and Happy Oyster teams into the Token Foundry Unit. This group will report directly to CEO Wu Yongming, indicating its strategic importance for monetizing AI technologies.

The timing appears deliberate - last quarter's earnings revealed Alibaba's AI business has moved beyond the costly development phase into commercial returns. Market response has been positive, with analysts noting the Qwen-3.7 model's strong showing in coding benchmarks (third globally, first in China) creates a competitive moat.

Why This Matters Now

Alibaba's reorganization comes as Chinese tech firms race to close the gap with Western AI leaders. By separating but coordinating research and commercialization efforts, the company aims to:

  • Accelerate breakthroughs in foundational models
  • Speed up product development cycles
  • Better monetize existing AI capabilities

Industry watchers will be closely monitoring how the new structure performs, particularly whether the Token Foundry can translate Alibaba's technical strengths into sustainable revenue streams.

Key Points:

  • Major restructuring merges AI divisions, creates new research and business units
  • Zhou Jingren named Chief Scientist to lead cutting-edge AI research
  • Token Foundry Unit will commercialize AI technologies under CEO supervision
  • Qwen models performing strongly in global benchmarks
  • Commercial returns already appearing in financial results
